Hi Vampires! We all love using AI to write sweet messages to our significant others, but there might be some downsides as well, e.g. student work & authenticity. This week will provide you with some strategies on how to combat this. Now, this probably goes without saying that most of this will focus on secondary, but grade 4 kids can also get in on the disingenuous academic fun.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING: SESSIONS Round 2: Departing Teachers & Drive (or anyone wanting some Drive assistance) We are offering some 1:1 time to sit down and work on migrating docs to Shared Drive and migrating curricular content that you want to take with you. CHATGPT – HOW TO LIVE WITH CHATGPT – A NUMBER OF STRATEGIES TO HELP YOU MAINTAIN ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Yes, AI can provide numerous learning opportunities, but from a student perspective, the lure of having a robot tutor/butler might be too tempting. If you are concerned about the authenticity of your students’ work, here are some strategies to help with this. Handwritten Assignments In-class, handwritten assignments. No computer, no AI. Yes, it also supports the long game in preparing our kids for their IB exams.
If you want a quick and easy means for kids to submit these handwritten assignments before they leave class (to Classroom and then easily to Managebac/Seesaw), have a look at the following video: | “Digitizing Handwritten Assessments”
Writing Sample Also handwritten, this is useful as a pre-assessment and as a quick formative. If later assignments in the same unit turn out to be strikingly different from your writing samples, how can we explain this? Either you are indeed the world’s greatest teacher or maybe…π€ Version History (Google Docs) If you suspect something is up (π€), have a look at the Version History (command+option+shift+h). Most kids are not patient enough to not copy from ChatGpt and paste the entire block of text into their work. So, large chunks of solid-colored text in Google Version History is an indicator of unauthentic work. The Perfect Submission Look too good to be true? Look at some previous work, pre-Chatgpt, there will be some grammatical errors, if not some linguistic quirks. If a kid is turning in grammatically perfect work for a quick brainstorming, timed-writing assignment… π€. = classic Turnitin (Coming Soon) AI writing & Turnitin (As mentioned in last week’s Tech Bytes) Sounds like an 80’s film, “How do you combat a runaway renegade robot? With another runaway renegade robot!” Turnit in VS Chatgpt Working closely with educators, weβre rapidly innovating to address AI writing and AI-generated text. In the works, here’s a “sneak preview” of how it will function.
